Washington D.C. was the destination for a group of Americus Middle School students and parents in mid-June.
The group, along with school librarian and sponsor Denise Cottenmyre, flew into Reagan National Airport on June 8. They flew back on June 11 after spending time at Colonial Williamsburg and the Jamestown settlement in southern Virginia, George Washington’s Mt. Vernon estate in northern Virginia and as much time as they could find on the Mall in Washington D.C.
The group broke into smaller groups to tour the Smithsonian museums and National Archives. They also took a driving tour of monuments. Along the way, they shared a digital camera provided by the tour company to snap these pictures.
The group spent last school year raising money for the trip. Those who traveled were:
- Students: Hailey Anstey, Kaitlain Centlivre, Kasey DeWeese, Taylor Elbe, Brittney Harmon, Colby Hayes, Taylor Heins, Nate Hill, Brian Hultgren, Joseph Kehoe, Alex Larson, Luke Larson, Jake Pearson, Cody Schaefer, Jacinda Scrivner, Katy Yingst, Madison Ziegler and Megan Zimmerling.
- Adults: Lana Anstey, Mary Hellen Bell, Kathleen Centlivre, Denise Cottenmyre, Angie Heins, Christine Hultgren, Roxie and Mike Pearson, Marge Scrivner and Denise Ziegler.

Mrs. Cottenmyre was a fabulous social studies teacher when I was her student, I can only imagine the impact that this hands on experience had on these incredibly fortunate students.
