Emporia State students from 43 storm-swept Kansas counties can put off paying tuition next month.
The Kansas Board of Regents announced this week that students from a county where a disaster has been proclaimed can defer tuition and fee payments. The announcement affects the six state universities, including ESU.
The universities will waive late fees and develop individual payment plans for each student. To qualify for the waiver and payment extension, ESU students can call the student financial services office at 341-5340.
“Students that have been affected by the recent natural disasters have had more immediate and pressing concerns than tuition due dates,” regents chair Christine Downey-Schmidt said in a release.
The assistance applies to residents of 20 flooded, southeast Kansas counties and 24 storm-damaged and flooded counties that were declared eligible for federal aid. Locally, that includes Lyon County, Coffey County, Greenwood County and Osage County, which falls in both categories. The area also includes the cities of Greensburg, which was leveled by a tornado in May, and Coffeyville, which was flooded in June.

"students from a county where a disaster has been proclaimed can defer tuition and fee payments."
Defer means to put off until later.
I'm pretty sure that ESU & the 5 others can MORE THAN AFFORD to pay the tuition for those students for at least one semester.
This is not impressive by any means.....helpful to the students, maybe for now, but when student loans collect interest over a longer period of time, it's not that great.
After all, since all the universities are tax free & the Board of Regents doesn't seem to be hurting for money, why not?

I think that was nice of them to at least defer. I mean they really didn't have to do anything at all. Just because an institution can afford to pay for something doesn't mean they should have to or be looked down upon because they aren't giving away money all the time.
