Kansas’ ‘Becoming

an Outdoors-Woman’

program

Kansas’ “Becoming an Outdoors-Woman,” a non-profit, non-membership program sponsored by the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks, will take place Sept. 28-30 at Rock Springs 4H Center outside Junction City.

BOW gives women the chance to learn a variety of outdoor skills, from hunting and archery, to fishing and float tubing, to rappelling and wild game cooking. This year will be no different, with more than 35 classes to choose from.

If the classes aren’t enough, participants can try their hand at knot tying, test their shooting skills with a laser system or go for the Coleman BOW Games during some of the mini-sessions. And the fun doesn’t stop when the sun goes down. What outdoor experience would be complete without star gazing and campfires?

BOW is an educational opportunity that teaches hands-on outdoor skills to adult women in a safe and supportive atmosphere. BOW workshops are designed specifically for women who are beginners, so no experience is necessary.

BOW provides the equipment and supplies. All participants need to bring is their enthusiasm. The cost is $180 for cabins or $175 for tent lodging.

For more information, contact Jami Vonderschmidt at kansasbow@sbcglobal.net, or go to the “education” link at www.kdwp.state.ks.us.

Under the new Kansas Hunter Education law passed in 2004, only participants 11 years of age or older can be certified.

Contact Phil Taunton at (620) 342-5016 to register or for further information.

Camp Alexander

‘Home on the Range’ Outdoor Challenge

Camp Alexander invites you to participate in the First Annual “Home on the Range” Outdoor Challenge. This youth and family-oriented program will take place Aug. 25 and will coincide with Emporia’s 150-year anniversary celebration. The goal is for the “Home on the Range” Camp Alexander Outdoor Challenge to become an exciting annual event.

Each team will consist of four members with at least one person being under the age of 16. The teams will participate in four required events (archery, air rifle turkey shoot, sporting clays, lure casting contest) plus one optional challenge. Points will be awarded according to the team’s finish in each event. Scores will then be tallied after the completion of all events and the team with the highest total score will be declared the winner. Individual event winners also will be recognized and awarded a prize. One lucky youth will also win a lifetime hunting or fishing license in a random drawing.

Invite your family, friends, and co-workers to take the challenge. Registration closes on Aug. 12.
