Singing at
commencement
Sarah Priest of Emporia, a senior in music education at Kansas State University, will sing the national anthem at commencement for the College of Education at KSU at 11 a.m. May 12 in Bramlage Coliseum.
The university will present degrees to more than 2,600 students on Saturday in Salina and May 12 in Manhattan.
Team places second
Emporian Emma Goff was a member of the Kansas State University financial planning team that placed second at the national collegiate financial planning competition championship, the Ameriprise Planning Invitational, this month in Minneapolis, Minn. Goff and the other two team members are seniors majoring in financial planning.
The team has a long track record of success. In competition among 30 to 40 schools, KSU won national titles in 2006, 2005, 2003 and 2000.
At this year’s competition, K-State finished behind Virginia Tech.
Outstanding at KU
Former Emporian David Peavler, a doctoral student in history at the University of Kansas, was awarded an Outstanding Graduate Teaching Assistant Award at the university earlier this month. The honor included $500 in cash.
Peavler is the son of David L. and the late Connie Peavler. As a staff sergeant in the Kansas Air National Guard, Peavler returned to KU Feb. 28 after a six-month deployment to Kirkuk, Iraq, where he trained more than 100 Iraqi fire, rescue and emergency medical personnel.
Honored at El Dorado
Butler Community College’s department of residence life honored students during an awards banquet April 19 in El Dorado. Among the students receiving academic achievement awards was Heather Wagoner of Emporia. Wagoner also received an appreciation certificate for her work this year as a resident assistant.
Also recognized was RA Nolan Strawder of Burlington.
Among the RAs for next year introduced at the banquet was Katherine Fuller of Emporia.
Join Mortar Board
Two Kansas State University students from Council Grove have been inducted into Mortar Board, a national college senior honor society for the next school year.
Kevin Bryant, a junior in management, is the vice president of recruitment for his fraternity, Delta Upsilon, and serves as a student intern for leadership studies and programs. He is a court-appointed special advocate for children and was an academy coach for The First Tee National Life Skills and Leadership Academy. Bryant is the son of Darrel and Rhonda Bryant.
Cody Catlin, a senior in finance, serves the College of Business Administration as an ambassador and orientation facilitator. Catlin was the treasurer of his fraternity, Theta Xi, and is a tutor for K-State athletics, where he also is involved with Powercat Pride, a football recruiting initiative. He was selected to attend the Fulbright International Summer Institute in Bulgaria and studied in Granada, Spain, during summer 2006. Catlin is the son of Gary and Becky Catlin.
Missouri scholarship
Leslie Stanbrough, daughter of Mark and Wendy Stanbrough of Emporia, is the recipient of a President’s Scholarship to attend the University of Central Missouri. The scholarship is valued at $1,500 per semester, and is to be used for payment of university academic fees, non-resident fees, campus housing and meal plan costs.
The scholarship is automatically renewed for recipients who earn at least 12 undergraduate credit hours per semester and remain in good academic standing. Recipients must achieve a minimum cumulative 3.25 grade point average upon completion of the second semester and every semester thereafter.
A senior at Emporia High School, Stanbrough plans to graduate in May and attend Central Missouri in the fall, majoring in business.
