The Things they Say ESU Style
Saturday, April 28, 2007
Now it’s my turn.
In keeping up with fellow sports writer Michael Ashford and his column two weeks ago, it is time to unveil the Emporia State athletics Top 25 quotes of the 2006-07 sports year.
Congratulations to all the winners — and all those that made me laugh out loud into my tape recorder.
F “They can’t see me, baby.”
ESU guard DeAndre Townsend, describing how he managed to cut through four defenders and make a pass to teammate Jordan Fithian. Townsend stands at 5-foot-8.
F “I wouldn’t really say I’ve been carrying a big load. Seventeen points a game is not that miraculous.”
ESU junior Michelle Stueve, who led the MIAA in scoring and was an All-American for the second consecutive year .
F “It looked to me like her mother taught them to her, and I don’t think she played basketball.”
ESU women’s basketball coach Brandon Schneider on guard Tegan Stuart’s errant behind-the-back passes.
F “I told Coach if I was going to get a flag, I should have did a dance or something. That would have really earned it.”
ESU wide receiver Jermaine Barnett, who received a 15-yard penalty for excessive celebration after a touchdown against Fort Hays State.
F “When we’re there, we look like we’re the Slim-Fast people.”
ESU forward Jordan Fithian, talking about he and teammate Wes Book when they go grocery shopping at Wal-Mart while on their diet.
F “Now we’ve got to take care of the wives when they get back. We’ve got to recruit them and tell them everything’s going to be OK.”
ESU coach Garin Higgins, on what he planned to do after the spring recruiting season.
F “Coach said we’re going to get a press-breaker in, so that would be good.”
ESU guard Wes Book, after the Hornets saw a 20-point lead disappear after Southwest Baptist started a full-court press. ESU still won, 93-84.
F “Those are not stats we want Don to promote.”
ESU women’s basketball coach Brandon Schneider, when asked about Central Missouri coach Dave Slifer’s five-game win streak at White Auditorium. The stat appeared in the game notes produced by ESU sports information director Don Weast.
F “You go in the bathroom, and your Q-tips are perfectly in order, and you didn’t do it.”
ESU guard Donta Watson, talking about the neat-freak habits of teammate and roommate DeAndre Townsend.
F “It’ll be pretty tough (to throw on us), especially if you’re throwing the fade. I’m going to put that out right now. I’m not letting that happen. That’s what it is.”
ESU cornerback Brandon Stribling, before the 2006 season began.
F “I stood to my promise. At the beginning of the year, I told you no fades. There were no fades called on me the whole season. Not one fade got called on me. I put it out there, and I stuck to my word. So next year, when they play bump and man, hopefully they’ll stick to it, too.”
ESU cornerback Brandon Stribling, after his final game against Missouri Southern.
F “Wes texted me during class the other day to say Coach (David Moe) had said that. I didn’t know whether to believe him or not, then I thought about it, and I thought about coach Moe, and I did believe it.”
ESU forward Caleb Tegtmeier, on how he’d heard about Moe’s controversial comments regarding Washburn to the Kansas City Star. The Star’s David Boyce reported that Moe had called Washburn the “new Missouri Rolla.”
F “They trigger me, and they get me going, just like the Little Engine That Could.”
ESU guard DeAndre Townsend, discussing hecklers in the crowd. Again, Townsend is 5-8.
F “When nobody’s guarding you, that’s the most fun time to shoot shots.”
ESU guard Donta Watson.
F “There were times he would just look at me, and I was like, ‘Fine, let’s go. Let’s go, Brandon.’”
Former ESU forward Emily Bloss Carpenter, describing the riffs she’d get into in practice with coach Schneider.
F “Tonight our offense was so bad that it made our defense atrocious.”
One of many “Mo-isms” from ESU men’s basketball coach David Moe.
F “Finals week is definitely tougher because it’s not going out and having fun. It’s actually challenging yourself to learn something new.”
ESU guard Scott Elliott, on whether basketball or finals week was more difficult.
F “The whole game I was screwed up. I didn’t know whether to shoot it or jump into people.”
ESU guard Wes Book, on the confusing Truman defense.
F “I wasn’t even going to Scott to be honest. I want to let everybody know. I didn’t even know he was cutting. I didn’t even see him.”
ESU forward Jordan Fithian, coming clean after an amazing behind-the-back pass in the lane to Scott Elliott. The pass was really intended for Caleb Tegtmeier.
F “If I could answer that real easily, I’d write a book and move to the Bahamas.”
ESU Athletic Director Kent Weiser, after being asked what made Brandon Schneider a successful coach.
F “I was so tired, I had my head down trying to get down the court. I’d look up, we’d hit a three, and I’d run back down to the other end.”
ESU forward Jordan Fithian, on how quickly ESU was scoring in the second half against Missouri Southern.
F “It’s good to hear other people say it. It makes you feel even better. You just boosted my confidence up.”
ESU cornerback Brandon Stribling, after he was asked about being a shut-down corner.
F “The new one’s exactly like the first one. It’s like an exact replay. I’d say the first one (is better) because it’s the original. And he’s not 60.”
ESU forward Jordan Fithian, comparing the first Rocky movie to the newest one.
F “We watched the film on the press break, and it looked really dumb. It looked a lot dumber than when it was in the game.”
ESU forward Caleb Tegtmeier, on his team’s press break against Southwest Baptist.
F “I’ve always been short. Actually, I was kind of the big guy in elementary school.”
ESU guard DeAndre Townsend.
Yep. He’s 5-8. Just like me.
