Emporia State’s Andy Vogelsberg became only the third man ever to win the javelin throw three consecutive years at the Drake Relays, taking first in the event with a heave of 229 feet, 8 inches on Friday.
The senior joins Alabama’s Mats Nilsson and Kansas’ Scott Russell as the only three-time winners of the event.
Vogelsberg’s throw earned him an automatic berth in the NCAA Championships for the third consecutive meet.
“I knew I had a chance, but there were some really good throwers,” Vogelsberg told The Associated Press. “It usually doesn’t take me five throws to figure it out, but it did. I just needed one.”
The ESU women’s 4x400 relay team also had a good day, provisionally qualifying with a time of 3:49.03.
The group — made up of Kara Euler, Jaclyn Sill, Danielle Sedivy and Jonel Rossbach — took sixth and advanced to today’s finals.
The women’s 4x100 relay team also advanced to the finals, as Euler, Lynnsey Nichols, Sill and Brooke Kent combined for a time of 47.76 seconds to place sixth.
The only other ESU competitors were members of the men’s 4x400 relay team, which took 27th. Derius Garner, Larry Beamon, Kyle Mann and Craig Saalfield posted a time of 3:20.35.
In addition to the two women’s relays reaching the finals, ESU also will have both its men’s and women’s sprint relay teams competing at Drake today.
The Hornets also picked up three second-place finishes at the UMKC Invitational on Friday. Tyson Allen and Emily Morgan both were runner-up in the javelin, and Trent Olivier placed second in the men’s hammer.
A majority of the ESU athletes will finish competition at the UMKC Invitational today.
