Lyon County commissioners on Thursday lowered the speed limit on Road U between roads 175 and 200 as well as nixed parking on Road 200 from Roads S and Road U.
Commissioners lowered the speed limit from 55 miles per hour to 45 miles per hour and nixed the parking near the Emporia Energy Center, a peaking power plant about six miles northeast of Emporia being built by Westar Energy. Commissioners discussed the two actions during Wednesday’s study session.
Commissioners also talked about the possibility of keeping the South Avenue Improvement Project in the county’s five-year plan. The project runs from Prairie Street west to the entrance to the transfer station and includes replacing a bridge located about 1/4 mile west of Prairie Street.
Lyon County Engineer Chip Woods said the construction cost estimate has gone up from $1.1 million to $1.6 million.
Commissioners set a date of May 16 to look at the South Avenue Project.
Commissioners disapproved the purchase of approximately 1,000 feet of used 18 feet steel casing at $20 per foot and 1,300 of used 12 feet steel casing at $9 per foot for an estimated total of $31,700 from Frank Black Pipe & Steel Supply Co.
