Emporia Middle School seventh-grader Joshua Staab will be honored at a national ceremony in May for his academic performance in the Duke Talent Search program.
Staab and four other EMS seventh-graders — Aaron Conner, Megann Olsson, Josh Ralston, and Jacob Riggs — also will be recognized for their academic performances in June at a state ceremony on the campus of the University of Kansas in Lawrence.
Joshua has been invited to participate in the Grand Ceremony at Duke University in Durham, N.C.
Students invited to the national ceremony scored at or better than 90 percent of the juniors or seniors in high school who took the ACT or SAT tests. That plateau represents 2 percent of the entire Talent Search population. Jacob will receive a medallion at the ceremony.
Students being honored in the state ceremony scored at or above the national average on at least one part of the SAT or ACT. Their enrichment services teacher, Ruth Vilander, plans to attend the ceremony with the students.
The seventh-grade Talent Search identifies academically talented students based on their scores on the ACT or SAT tests, the two standardized college entrance exams used by post-secondary schools. Eighteen EMS seventh-graders participated.
