Seven movers from Thomas Transfer and Storage work to load a box full of mortgage records from the Chase County Courthouse into a semi-truck. All items from the courthouse have to be moved into storage while a renovation takes place.

COTTONWOOD FALLS

The tenants of Chase County Courthouse have received their temporary re-location notice.

All the tenants will have to re-locate by May 7 to make way for the renovations project that was stalled until a county-wide retailers’ sales tax passed in the recent elections.

Departments have already started packing. Last week the third floor of the courthouse was being packed and hauled into a large truck by the Thomas Transfer company, who has been contracted to conduct the move.

Many of the items on the third floor included large, heavy books. The move was labor intensive and some books ended up taking the short route down the stairs when they were accidentally dropped, said Deb Zeiner of the Chase County Chamber of Commerce. Zeiner was preparing to take a tour through the building when she realized that moving was taking place.

In a recent commission meeting, Chase County commissioners talked about the temporary location, which is going to be at the Cottonwood Falls Municipal Building. They will be open at that new location by May 7.

All other items not needed will be put into storage. It has not been decided whether the building will be closed or remain open during construction.
