The Emporia High softball team ran into some good pitching on Tuesday, falling 10-0 and 10-1 in a doubleheader to Hayden in Topeka.
The bright spot for EHS coach Ray Owens was that his team continued to make strides with putting the ball in play.
“We made better contact and didn’t have as many strikeouts,” Owens said. “That was as good of a pitcher as we’ve faced all season (in Game One), and our girls were fouling pitches off and making contact. I felt a lot better about that.”
EHS struck out 10 times over the two games, which Owens called a major improvement from a few weeks ago.
The Wildcats showed their offensive firepower in the twinbill, posting 21 combined hits and shortening the first game with the run rule.
“We played a good-hitting team,” Owens said, “and our girls know it.”
Brendy Muninger led the EHS bats, going 2-for-2 in the first game with a double and single. Hilary Heinrichs also went 2-for-2 with two singles.
In Game Two, Tiffany Chalupa had two hits, including a double, while Muninger added a triple.
“Brendy and Tiffany have been our mainstays — they’ve hit well nearly every ballgame,” Owens said. “Now, we’re just trying to get the other girls going.”
EHS will play again Friday at Junction City.
