Emporia High girls soccer coach John Decker has known Jackie Wolff since she was a young girl. He’s seen what she can do on a soccer field.
So it came as no surprise to Decker when Wolff, a senior for Topeka West, was the primary culprit in Emporia High’s 3-0 loss to the Lady Chargers on Monday night, as Wolff scored twice for West.
“She’s a good player,” Decker said. “She’s very talented.”
Wolff got the scoring started for West in the 18th minute when she scored a breakaway goal on an assist from Sarah Peters to put West up, 1-0, which would be the score at halftime.
The Lady Chargers went through a long scoring drought until Ali McMahan bounced an unassisted shot into the net to put West ahead, 2-0, in the 68th minute, and then Wolff scored again in the 71st minute off another assist from Peters to close the scoring.
Emporia, meanwhile, could not overcome a Topeka West squad that physically outplayed the Lady Spartans, Decker said.
“They were just more physical,” he said. “There would be a loose ball, and they would either knock us down on the way to the ball or get the ball back from us if we got there first. We just needed to play with more intensity.”
Emporia dropped to 4-6 with the loss. On Friday, the Lady Spartans defeated Wichita East, 2-1.
EHS is back in action at 6 tonight when it takes on Highland Park at TRYSA.
