Jonel Rossbach provisionally qualified in the 1,500-meter run, placing ninth to lead the Emporia State track and field team at the Kansas Relays on Saturday.
The junior, who already had provisionally qualified with her first-place finish in the 3,000-meter run on Thursday, ran a 4:35.52 in the 1,500-meter race.
Trent Olivier had the other provisional mark Saturday, placing 10th in the discus with a throw of 159 feet, 6 inches.
Dustin Andrews posted a top-10 mark, taking eighth in the high jump after clearing 6 feet, 8.75 inches.
The men’s 1,600-meter sprint relay team added a 12th-place finish (3:36.16), while Brooke Kent (24th) and Jennifer Robinson (26th) competed in the long jump.
“As with any track meet as competitive as the KU Relays, we had our ups and downs,” ESU track coach Dave Harris said.
On Friday, ESU’s men’s four-mile relay team placed sixth, providing the best Hornet performance on the second day of the Kansas Relays.
The team of Michael Stephens, Skyler Delmott, Jonathan Heinicke and Eric Wellman finished the four-mile event in a time of 18:19.30.
Harris was especially pleased with the effort from Kara Euler on Saturday, who advanced to the finals of the 400-meter run and finished third (56.17 seconds). The time was good for a provisional qualification.
“She put a race together from the fast first 200 to a strong finish over the second 200,” Harris said. “I believe she is on target for a personal best in the next several weeks and will solidify her spot at Nationals.”
Euler’s teammate Jaclyn Sill finished in 11th (58.30 seconds).
Olivier and Damon Birk gave near identical performances in the shot put. Olivier’s throw of 51 feet, 5 3/4 inches earned him 15th, while Birk’s toss of 51 feet, 5 1/2 inches took 16th.
Other top-20 performances came from the women’s 4x100 relay team (15th; 47.99 seconds), Connie Philips in the javelin (16th; 119 feet, 10 inches) and Jennifer Robinson in the high jump (19th; 5 feet, 3 inches).
All-American Andy Vogelsberg did not compete Friday. Instead, he will save himself up for next week’s Drake Relays, where he will attempt to win his third consecutive javelin championship.
ESU will send select athletes to the Drake Relays on Thursday, while others will participate in the UMKC Invitational beginning Friday.
