Emporia swimmers see times fall at Trinity Invite

Monday, April 23, 2007

The Emporia High girls swim team saw a number of its athletes drop huge chunks of times to go along with two State qualifiers at the Trinity Invitational on Saturday.

The Lady Spartans’ 200-yard medley relay team of Morgan Goad, Caitlin McGuire, Whitney Starr and Hilary Larson made the State qualification time by finishing in 2 minutes, 3.08 seconds to finish sixth.

Larson also individually qualified for State in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 2:06.95, which placed her sixth, besting her previous season-high of 2:09.75, which she set at the Topeka High Invite on April 9.

Larson also has qualified for State in the 500-yard free, but she bettered her lifetime best in the event with a time of 5:42.23 to place seventh.

Goad just missed out on making the State time in the 100-yard backstroke, finishing in a personal-best 1:06.94. Mason Taylor placed 26th in the event, but dropped 6 seconds off her time to finish in 1:21.99. Angie Harris placed 19th (1:17.45).

McGuire placed 11th in the 100-yard breaststroke in a time of 1:20.85, while Summer Wilson dropped 4 seconds off her best time to finish 17th in 1:26.94.

The biggest drop of the day went to Michelle Thompson in the 100-yard freestyle, as she cut 10 seconds off her time to place 26th (1:09.07) Kathryn Scherich was the top finisher for EHS in the event in 13th (1:03.76) — she also finished 13th in the 50-yard free (27.87 seconds) — while Jennie Loucks came in 14th (1:03.77).

McGuire placed eighth in the 200-yard individual medley (2:32.24), while Starr came in 10th in the event (2:33.59).

Emporia’s 200-yard (1:53.54) and 400-yard (4:15.25) relay teams each placed seventh.

EHS finished seventh as a team with 156 points. Lawrence Free State won the team title with 321 points.

“This was a good finish for us,” EHS coach Bob Yevak said. “The kids swam very well.”
