Hetlinger works at recycling

Hetlinger Developmental Services client Dustin Adkins, left, gathers aluminum cans from Presbyterian Manor for recycling Thursday morning. Helping are client Bert Tauffig, and direct support staff Sarah Butler, right.

Hetlinger Developmental Services brings in more than 5,300 pounds of donated cans a year from organizations that donate cans to their recycling program.

In light of Earth Day, which is Sunday, Hetlinger’s recycling program couldn’t come at a better time. Hetlinger’s recycles everything from cans to bottles to newspapers and magazines, said Chrysanne Peralta, who runs the enrichment program at Hetlinger’s.

Between 10 and 15 consumers run a regular route that includes both industries, agencies and houses.

“What is the neat part for me is we also have a route that goes to homes,” said Tamie Vahsholtz, marketing coordinator at Hetlinger’s. “They (residents) sort it, put it into different containers and leave it for (consumers).”

The different items collected by Hetlinger’s consumers go to the Emporia Recycling Center.

“The employees at Emporia Recycling Center are really friendly,” Peralta said. “I think it makes their day when they come.”

The recycling route benefits consumers and the community, Vahsholtz said.

“To me the best part of the recycling program is it allows the consumers to be a part of the community,” she said.
