A family event with a variety of hands-on activities is planned from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday at the David Traylor Zoo of Emporia.
Angela Anderson, special activities and outreach coordinator at the zoo, said the event is the first of its kind held at the zoo as part of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums “Conservation Made Simple” campaign.
“It encourages families to learn about and to conserve the planet,” Anderson said.
Children and adults will be able to make pine cone bird feeders at one of the booths set up by the Lyon County Conservation District, which also will include a Kansas wildlife display.
Roger Wells of Quail Unlimited and Wells Wildlife Consultants, will have an exhibit featuring backyard birds and Kansas game birds, and representatives from Eisenhower State Park will set up a display about the benefits of recycling.
Eight to 10 zoo docents will be conducting activities set up in the classroom in the zoo’s education center building.
“They’ll get to make a water cycle bracelet,” Anderson said, adding that numerous other activities for children also will be available.
Anderson said that displays and activities will be scattered throughout the zoo.
“All over the sidewalk, by the llamas and in the classroom,” she said. “You’ll just have to wander everywhere.”
