Before the rains came late Tuesday afternoon, Eric Reimer was working on an even-par round of golf through his first nine holes of the Emporia High Invitational.

On the ninth hole at the Emporia Municipal Golf Course, Reimer had made a 35-foot downhill birdie putt to bring himself back to even par for his round, and he had kept it there heading into the 12th hole.

Then the rains arrived, and Reimer saw his scores start to rise. He double-bogeyed the 12th hole — the first hole played with a steady rain — and closed out his round at 6-over.

Reimer still finished fourth individually with a final score of 78 to lead Emporia High to a second-place team finish behind Manhattan, but he was left to think about what could have been had the wet weather held off for a couple hours.

“When the wind and rain started, it got a little chilly out there,” Reimer said. “It just went downhill from there. I kept getting bogeys and pars.

“I thought I finished pretty good considering the rainy conditions. It was tough out there.”

The highlight of Reimer’s first nine holes was his long putt for birdie on the ninth green. His approach shot sailed over the pin and came to a rest on a slight incline above the hole, leaving him with a putt that could have spelled trouble had he hit it too hard.

Instead, Reimer perfectly judged the speed of the slope with his putt and watched as his ball went slightly left and then curved back to the right before dropping into the cup, giving him a birdie to move back to even par.

“I was just trying not to leave it short,” Reimer said, “and knew if it started downhill too fast, it would have been bad. But it went in, which was nice.”

The rain came not long after, playing havoc on just about every score. Reimer and teammates Bren Fisher and Fletcher Harder, who finished at 79 and 81, respectively, each had higher scores on the back nine holes than on the front nine. Matt McAnarney was the only EHS scorer to have a lower score on his second nine holes, carding a 40 after a 41 on the first nine to finish at 81.

“The good thing was we got half the round in before it got real ugly,” EHS coach Rick Eckert said. “I was a little disappointed because it was one of those situations where if the concentration had been a little stronger, we could have shot a bit better ... but at the same time, we didn’t have anybody blow up either.”

Rounding out the field for EHS was Jared Johnson, who finished at 82, and Spencer Anderson, who came in at 114. Zach Young and Craig Morgan played as unattached competitors, finishing with rounds of 83 and 97, respectively.

Emporia finished with a team score of 319, 15 shots back of Manhattan (304). Hayden was third (320) and Seaman was fourth (340).

Another area team, Southern Lyon County — a combination of students from Olpe and Hartford — also made the short drive to the Emporia Municipal Golf Course, finishing fifth out of five teams with a score of 343.

Tanner Coble was the top finisher for the Southern Lyon County team, carding an 81 to finish in a tie for ninth, while Jordan Pargman finished with an 84 to tie for 18th. Tommy Smith finished with an 88, Seth Pargman shot a 90, Colby Gardner finished with a 99 and Michael Schmidt carded a 107.
