The Emporia High girls soccer team lost to Seaman, 2-1, Tuesday night, falling on a late penalty kick with less than 5 minutes to play in regulation.
With the scored tied at 1, Seaman sent the ball ahead to Jessica Barranco, who raced down the field with Emporia’s Jessica Muckenthaler with her stride-for-stride.
However, once the ball got inside the box, Muckenthaler was called for a penalty for using too much force, and Barranco was awarded a penalty kick.
Despite EHS goalkeeper Melanie Nuessen correctly choosing the right side on Barranco’s kick, the ball still made it through to the net to give Seaman the 2-1 lead with 4 1/2 minutes left to play.
Emporia High led at halftime thanks to an early score by Jordan Sosa. Sosa scored her second goal of the season on an assist from Danielle Flanagin in the 8th minute to put EHS up, 1-0.
Seaman tied the game at 1 when Abby Brown fired a shot over the head of Nuessen and just underneath the crossbar for an unassisted goal in the 64th minute.
The loss dropped Emporia to 3-4 on the season.
