Twice in the span of a few seconds during Monday night’s game against Wichita Northwest, the Emporia High girls soccer team was denied of a game-tying goal not by a Northwest player, but by a goal post.
Instead, the Lady Spartans never got on the scoreboard, losing 1-0 to Northwest.
With EHS down by one goal with about 5 minutes left, the Northwest goalkeeper came out from the net. Emporia’s Jordan Sosa took a shot aiming for the corner of the net, but the ball instead bounced off the pole and came to a rest just in front of the net.
“It stopped just on the line,” EHS coach John Decker said.
Northwest tried to clear the ball out, but it bounced off a player and again started back toward the goal.
And it hit the pole — again.
That was the last chance for the Lady Spartans, who went on to lose, 1-0, in what Decker called a “well-played game.”
“We had our chances, we just didn’t put them in,” Decker said. “We would attack for about 10 minutes and then they’d attack for about 10 minutes. It went that way all game. It was just two teams battling.”
The loss dropped EHS to 3-3.
