Much to do this weekend and next

Tuesday, April 17, 2007

Ladies and gentlemen, start your engines. And then get ready to show them off.

On April 29, Brown Express Athletic Club will put on its 10th annual super custom car show. Cars, trucks, lowrider bikes and more will have a chance to win prizes in a couple of dozen categories, including a $100 prize for best in show.

Registration will run from 10 a.m. until noon. The show itself will be held at the Emporia State University student recreation center north of campus. The public can attend free, but competitors must pay $27 to enter a car or truck, or $22 to enter a lowrider bike or miscellaneous vehicle.

And if loud bikes and muscle cars don’t quite crank your motor, there are a variety of options. Games and piñatas will be on hand for the kids, along with several food vendors and a climbing wall set up by Company A 1st Battalion, 635th Armor. Performers for the day will include the BSO “Soul Steppers” dance group of Emporia High School, rap groups and a karate demonstration by Topeka Midwest Martial Arts.

In addition, Maggie Delaney of Overland Park, the current Miss Kansas Outstanding Teen, will be on hand to sing the national anthem and sign autographs. Participants in the car show will also have a chance to win raffle prizes.

Proceeds from the car show will go to the ESU Presidential Academic Scholarship Fund.

For more information, call the Emporia Area Chamber of Commerce at 342-1600 or organizer Gilbert Rodriguez at 340-0353.

While people are waiting for next week’s car show, there are plenty events this weekend to keep them busy:

— The Light of Hope 5 kilometer run and walk for SOS will go from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday, starting at the ESU tennis courts. The cost is $18 to $20 and the event also includes children’s activities. The event is to raise awareness about child abuse, child neglect, sexual assault and domestic violence, and to raise money for SOS.

— The fourth annual Artist Walk, put on by the Emporia Arts Council and Emporia Main Street, will take over downtown Emporia from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. The event is a chance for local artists to show their stuff and in the past has included everything from acting to chainsaw sculpture. For more information or to register, call 340-6430.

— A coin collection auction will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at the David Traylor Zoo.

— The Spring Migration Triathlon will take place from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday at Emporia State University. Competitors will swim 400 meters, bicycle 20 kilometers and run five kilometers. For more information, call 341-5399.

— The First United Methodist Church will celebrate its 150th anniversary on Sunday. Services start at 9:15 a.m. at the church, 823 Merchant St., followed by a noon banquet at the Emporia State University Memorial Union. For more information, call 342-6186.

— “Party for the Planet,” an Earth Day celebration, will run from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday at the David Traylor Zoo. For more information, call 342-6558.
