Larson, Fry lead EHS to 3rd place

Tuesday, April 17, 2007

Hilary Larson and Hayley Fry each picked up first-place finishes for the Emporia High girls swimming and diving team Monday at the Manhattan Quad, helping the Lady Spartans place third as a team.

Larson won the 100-yard freestyle in a time of 59.56 seconds, just ahead of teammate Whitney Starr (1:00.77), while Fry won the dive competition with a final score of 145.45, beating out Manhattan’s Noel Stuckenschmidt (140.20).

Larson also placed fourth in the 100-yard breaststroke, finishing in 1:12.65.

Larson and Starr were a part of the 200-yard freestyle relay team — with Caitlin McGuire and Jennie Loucks — that finished second in a time of 1:53.97, about 5 seconds back of Hutchinson’s relay team.

Another EHS relay team, the 400-yard free quartet of Larson, Loucks, Morgan Goad and Kathryn Scherich, placed second, touching the wall in a time of 4:18.22 behind first-place winner Manhattan (3:58.53).

Individually, McGuire picked up a second-place finish in the 50-yard free with a time of 27.30 seconds. Scherich came in third (28.55). McGuire also was the top EHS finisher in the 100-yard breaststroke, placing fourth (1:20.17).

Goad placed third in the 200-yard freestyle (2:16.22) and fifth in the 100-yard butterfly (1:14.20), while Scherich finished fifth in the 500-yard free in a time of 6:38.80.

Starr also picked up a fifth-place finish, with hers coming in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:32.63.

Emporia’s 200-yard medley relay team of Taylor Mason, Michelle Thompson, Erica Bennett and Summer Wilson finished seventh in a time of 2:29.85.

Freshman Aubrey Armitage placed third in the dive competition with a score of 129.36, while her sister, sophomore Alli, placed fifth (115.80).

As a team, EHS finished with 330 points. Manhattan won the quad with 394 points, followed by Hutchinson (369). Hays was fourth with 195 points.
