Sales info has short shelf life

Saturday, April 14, 2007

Q Why isn’t property sales information left on the Lyon County Appraiser’s web site all year? Who has access to them for the remaining 11 months?

A Property sales information is not required to be public information, Appraiser Gary Post said.

“If somebody wants sales during the balance of the year, they have to indicate to the county appraiser that they are thinking about an appeal or a protest or something like that,” he said. “Then I can give them something like sales of like properties.”

Because of the language of the statute, Post said he felt comfortable posting sales information for 30 days after annual property valuation notices are mailed.

“When a property owner gets that notice, then the first thing he’s thinking about is the appeal,” Post said. “I’m giving him or her the data to check and see if my data makes sense, in line with the sales that have occurred. ... Some people just like to be able to dig for this data on their own.”

Property valuations are available online year-round at http://www.lyoncounty.org/Appraiser.htm

Q Is there any truth to the rumor that the Emporia Tyson plant is shutting down?

A “We have no plans to close any of our beef plants,” said Tyson spokesman Gary Mickelson.

F “Because You Asked” runs occasionally, as readers inquire about local issues. Questions should be signed, but names will not be revealed.
