Madison
The Madison Booster club purchased a portable sound system and a digital camera for the elementary school this year according to elementary principal Stan Mitchell. Mitchell relayed the information during a recent USD 386 Board of Education meeting.
Also during a recent meeting, board members learned that security cameras will be installed at the elementary school. There will be four cameras outside and three inside. The total cost will be $13,591.54. Lighting outside the building also will need to be addressed.
New Strawn
At a recent monthly meeting, the New Strawn City Council learned an Ottawa construction company submitted the low bid for a U.S. 75 widening project at New Strawn. Killough Construction Co. submitted a bid of $294,283.85 to widen the highway from the Arrowhead entrance to Neosho Street. With construction engineering costs and other miscellaneous costs, the state expects to spend $376,081 on the project. Any costs incurred by the city will be reimbursed by the state.
Council Grove
Cynthia Engle, mayor, and Anita Thomas, Tony Elias and Debi Schwerdtfeger, city council members were administered their oath of office following the recent general election. Steve Shepard, a representative from Ward I, was elected president of the council. He will conduct meetings in the absence of the mayor.
