After leading the competition five events in, Emporia State’s Cameron Babb settled for third place in the decathlon Friday night at the D-II Challenge.
The 10-event competition finished in Manhattan after the first seven events took place in Emporia.
Babb finished with 6,287 points, putting him only behind provisional qualifiers Alan Yoder of Fort Hays State and Zac Preble of Bemidji State.
Babb won the javelin on Day Two, but it wasn’t enough to overcome a disappointing showing in the discus.
After one event, Fort Hays State and Bemidji State are tied in the men’s team standings with 10 points. ESU is third with six points.
The main portion of the meet will resume at noon Sunday at Welch Stadium.
ESU men’s tennis win
The Emporia State men’s tennis team went 3-0 in its two-day trip to Sioux Falls, S.D., on Thursday and Friday.
The Hornets took down Augustana, 6-0, on Thursday night before defeating Mary, 9-0, and Minnesota State, 5-1, on Friday.
ESU improved its record to 10-5. The 10 wins are the team’s most since the 2002-03 season.
Both the men and women will compete again on April 18, playing Cowley County Community College in exhibition matches.

Is Babb a son of any of the Babb brothers originally from Topeka who played basketball for ESU in the past?
