EHS girls soccer brings offensive firepower against Junction City

Friday, April 13, 2007

The Emporia High girls soccer team had the offense and defense going Thursday night against Junction City, as the Lady Spartans rolled to a 10-0 victory over the Lady Jays.

Three Lady Spartans recorded two goals apiece in the victory, and EHS did not allow Junction City to get a single shot on goal.

“We really worked the ball in and made some nice passes. We set up some nice give-and-goes to get some scores,” EHS coach John Decker said. “Our defense did a good job. When they tried to attack, we put a lot of pressure on them and played with a lot of control.”

Emporia wasted no time getting the scoring started, as Danielle Flanagin knocked in an unassisted goal in the game’s second minute to give EHS a 1-0 lead.

Emporia went on a dry spell for about 18 minutes before the floodgates opened, as Chelsea Pearson’s goal in the 20th minute began a flurry of eight goals in 20 minutes for EHS, which went into halftime up 9-0.

Jessica Decker put in back-to-back goals in the 22nd and 23rd minutes, while Kylee McCullough had her own two-fer in the 24th and 27th minutes to put EHS ahead 6-0.

Kylie White scored in the 32nd minute, Rachelle VanGundy added a goal in the 37th minute and Flanagin added her second goal in the 38th minute to cap Emporia’s first-half scoring.

“We started off and got a pretty quick goal, then went through a spurt where we had a hard time scoring. We made some adjustments,” Decker said, “and once we did that, we rattled off those eight goals.”

The game ended by the mercy rule 11 minutes into the second half when Sosa scored on an assist from Decker to make it 10-0.
