The Emporia State women’s basketball team made one of its signings official on Wednesday, as Cloud County’s Becky Zabel signed on to play with the Lady Hornets next season.
Zabel, a 5-foot-10 forward originally from Onaga, averaged 8.8 points, 7.4 rebounds, 2.6 assists and 1.9 steals last year for CCCC. She also shot 53 percent from the floor and is ranked in the top 20 in assists and rebounds at the school.
Zabel was a first-team All-Class 2A performer for Onaga in 2005, averaging 17.7 points and 11.2 rebounds per game her senior year. As a track athlete, she was also second in the state in the javelin and third in the triple jump.
Zabel joins a large incoming class at ESU, as Bree Kisner, Brittney Miller, Allie Renberg, Alli Volkens and Jessen Tucker all inked during the early signing period. Those six will join Ida Edwards, who transferred from Pensacola Junior College and started attending classes this semester at ESU.
Olpe’s Kayla Krueger also has told the Gazette that she will join the Lady Hornets as a walk-on next year.
