Andy Vogelsberg had a name for his tendency to throw poorly early in the season before turning it on late.

“The last three years,” Vogelsberg said, “I’ve just kind of been like a sleeper.”

The Emporia State senior was able to drop that title Monday while adding another — automatic national qualifier — as he led the Hornets to one of 11 individual championships in the re-scheduled ESU State Farm Relays.

The defending national champion Vogelsberg tossed the javelin 228 feet, 4 inches, winning the event with the second-best throw of his life.

His all-time best was 245 feet, 3 inches at the National Championships last year.

“I know he was feeling good,” ESU coach Dave Harris said, “and it takes a lot to make him feel good in the javelin because he has very high standards.”

Vogelsberg hit the automatic qualifying mark in just his second meet of the season even with a body fatigued from his weight-lifting program.

Most encouraging for him, though, might have been his consistency. After setting a provisionally qualifying mark last week in Arlington, Texas, Vogelsberg had three consecutive strong throws in the finals on Monday.

“That was my goal this year — I wanted to be consistently at the top instead of just coming on late,” Vogelsberg said. “It’s almost exciting right now that I’m missing positions and throwing what I am because I know there’s so much more in there.”

Freshman Derius Garner also had a solid day for ESU, winning a pair of running events.

After posting a time of 48.8 seconds in the 400-meter dash at Arlington last week, Garner followed it up with a 48.9-second mark in the chilly air Monday, taking the win by .31 seconds.

“It’s a lot harder in the cold,” Garner said. “I’m from Omaha, Neb., but we don’t run that much when it’s real cold. It’s usually really hot.”

After picking up his victory T-shirt in the press box, Garner told Harris that he would be back up to take his 200-meter shirt later.

Emporia State University's Shae Camien blurs past as he competes in the 1500 meter run Monday afternoon during the State Farm Relay at Welcch Stadium.

“I like to stand behind my words,” a smiling Garner said.

Sure enough, the freshman came through on his promise, closing in late on unattached Idiatro Jeremiah to win the 200-meter race with a time of 22.78 seconds.

“He’s a confident freshman. I like to see that,” Harris said. “I like it when a freshman makes a name for themselves, and he’s doing that.”

Connie Phillips took a step forward in her comeback from injury, provisionally qualifying with a throw of 137 feet, 8 inches in the javelin.

The mark put her at second place behind only Kansas State’s Ashley Reider.

Phillips was an All-American in the javelin her freshman season before sitting out all of last year with a back injury.

“It’s been a little struggle,” Phillips said. “I had to get over the injury in my back and also get through my head to get through it.”

The sophomore said the biggest obstacle had been getting over the fear that of re-injuring herself.

“You know that your back is healthy, but in your head you’re like, ‘Oh, if I strain it too much, I could injure it,’” Phillips said. “That’s always in the back of your mind.”

Trent Olivier took the other provisionally qualifying mark for ESU, throwing 164 feet, 2 inches in the discus to place second. He also took fourth in both the hammer (160 feet, 4 inches) and shot put (50 feet, 11 inches).

Freshman Jennifer Robinson added a pair of championships, winning the high jump (5 feet, 3 inches) and also the triple jump (35 feet, 1.25 inches).

Kara Euler (200-meter dash), Brooke Kent (long jump), Molly Pannbacker (discus), Cameron Babb (long jump), and Douglas Marshall (triple jump) had the other individual championships for the Hornets.

ESU will play host to its next meet this weekend, participating in the Papa John’s D-II Challenge.

The meet is unique in that team standings are kept.

“It’s a chance to line up and score,” Harris said, “and we don’t so that in track and field very often anymore.”
