The Kansas Turnpike Authority will take a bigger bite from driver’s pockets beginning on July 1.
According to an announcement from the KTA, the increases will average about 5 percent, with all fares under $2.50 being rounded to the nearest nickel amount. The last toll increase was in 2004.
The increase is to finance ongoing operations and capital investments that have been made or are being planned.
One of the major investments will be replacement of the east and west bridges over the Kansas River at Lawrence. The engineering consultant is requiring that existing bridges be taken out of service by 2012. That project is expected to cost about $140 million, which is almost as much as the entire construction cost of the Turnpike in the mid-1950s.

I thought when this was built we would only pay toll for a few years? What happened to that or was that even true?
