Reed named Kansas Player of the Year

Burlington’s Tyrel Reed has been named the Gatorade 2006-07 Kansas Boys Basketball Player of the Year.

The 6-foot-3 guard averaged 26.4 points, 7.1 rebounds, 5.8 assists and 4.6 steals per game this season for the Wildcats.

Reed will attend the University of Kansas on a basketball scholarship this fall.

ESU State Farm Relays postponed till Monday

Because of cold weather, the ESU/State Farm Relays track meet has been moved to Monday, with field events beginning at 2 p.m. and running events starting at 2:30. There will be no preliminaries in the running events, as all races will be finals competing against other times.

Beginning at 5 p.m. cookies and hot chocolate will be given to the first 100 fans at the north concession stand as part of Fan Appreciation Day.

ESU tennis teams

victorious in Missouri

The Emporia State women’s tennis team picked up two victories, while the men also took an exhibition win in Joplin, Mo., on Friday.

The women defeated Missouri Southern, 5-1, and Southwest Baptist, 6-1. Because of limited court space indoors, the duals ended as soon as ESU clinched the win.

The Lady Hornets are 10-2 overall and 5-1 in MIAA play.

The men defeated two-year school Arkansas-Ft. Smith 5-1 in an exhibition match. They will face Southwest Baptist at 8 a.m. this morning in Joplin.

ECS tracksters enjoy

success at Madison

The Emporia Christian School participated in the Madison Middle School Invitational Track Meet on April 4.

On the girls side, Ashley Wheeler won the 100-meter dash in 16.8 seconds, followed by Kayla Smith (second, 16.9) and Tara McKenzie (seventh, 19.9). Smith finished third in the 200 in a time of 36.2 seconds.

The other first place on the girls side went to Mattie Decker in the high jump with a clearance of 3 feet, 10 inches. Decker placed sixth in the 75-meter hurdles also (18.5 seconds).

ECS’s 4x200 relay team of Wheeler, Smith, Decker and Natalie Waters placed second, while the 4x100 relay team of Wheeler, McKenzie, Decker and Smith placed third.

Emily Stevenson came in third in the long jump with a leap of 9-09 3/4, and Emily Stevenson placed eighth in the discus (43-06).

On the boys side, Matt Wayman picked up the lone top finish for ECS by winning the long jump (15-05 1/4). Jonathan Wernli placed eighth and Caleb Love finished 11th.

Love finished in third in the high jump (4-04).

The 4x100 (Wernli, Love, Cody Caudill and Wayman) and 4x200 (Wernli, Love, Erik Henry and Wayman) relay teams picked up second-place finishes. Caudill finished fifth in the shot put (27-07) and seventh in the discus (63-10 1/2), while Luke Gitchel placed 12th and 11th in each event, respectively. In the 100-meter dash, Wernli finished sixth (15.23 seconds) and Henry came in seventh (15.55).
