Pharmacy to move

Saturday, April 7, 2007

Q Will the Dillons pharmacy be moving out of the mall once the new Walgreens is complete this summer?

A Yes, according to Flinthills Mall manager Misti Hampton. The Dillons lease expires at the end of May and Walgreens has a non-compete clause forbidding other pharmacies in the immediate neighborhood.

A new location for the Dillons pharmacy has not been chosen yet. The pharmacy moved to the mall in 2005 after the Dillons grocery store at 1312 Industrial Road closed.

Walgreens’ developer, Mission River LLC of Topeka, bought the southwest corner of the Flinthills Mall parking lot late last year. The new 14,800 square-foot store will be located at the corner of 15th Avenue and Industrial Road and will include a drive-through pharmacy window and photo-finishing services.

It's funny we can't have a Lowe's or Home Depot for fear of closing Sutherlands, Water's, Mark II, Bluestem however we can now have another pharmacy with 1-2 miles of 3 others.

You know, the Flint Hills Mall is pretty pathetic. Whenever I go there (I don't live in Emporia, anymore) or whenever I take people there, it's always good for a laugh. They say "this is the mall? Where's the rest of it?"

Mall??? We can call THAT a MALL? It is a big joke and now a big eye sore on the corner that blocks it. Like we needed a pharmacy. This town is getting more pathetic every day. We cant keep stores open. People cant afford rent to have a business here and the Mall cant have decent rent so more go in there and STAY in there. Shop Emporia?? WHY! WHY! WHY!

The reason stores can't stay open is because people spend all their money in China-Mart on throw away goods. But I'm guilty of going there a time or two a year for some little things-My employer sells them a lot of US-made product. But then people wonder why there's no service department,no warranty,no store selection to shop.Hear that sucking sound of 10 million+ going towards Arkansas every year? Most of it will leave the country. The next time your big screen acts up,I guess you could ship it to Bentonville for repairs.Use the local owned businesses, stores, eateries, and craftspeople or lose'em.Buy quality the first time,or buy cheap 3 times over. The choice is yours every day. This is just supply and demand at work!

Flint Hills Mall has been pretty pathetic, until recently. Did they change ownership? The place is really starting to look better, like someone actually cares about it again.

I'm looking forward to Walgreens opening. I just tried to fill a prescription at Walmart, and after they told me to wait 30 minutes, they then informed me that there was a problem with the insurance. They didn't bother to page me, either... they just wasted my time. Folks, if you want Emporia to do better, shop somewhere other than Walmart as much as possible!

I hate walmart just because of what you are saying. They think because they are the only store in town they can treat people that way. Yes, I do believe everybody is excited for Walgreens. I have shopped in the ones in Wichita and am very pleased. I do not however plan to change my Dillion's pharmacy. Those guys are the best ever! Walmart also sends out price checkers. If you do not know what this is, let me tell you, they are employess of the local walmart that go to other stores and check the prices, then go back and lower walmart price to like a penny less. Oh, also the prices in our walmart are higher than Wichita, Topeka and Oklahoma. I avoid walmart at all cost. Emporia needs to let other stores come into our town just for the diversity. Stores leave because of the taxes and rent if applicable. If their overhead is too high, you best believe that the store is not going to stick around. But of course remember our leaders will want to give tax breaks and other incentives to whom they want to, not what is best for the city. Also they will raise our property taxes to compensate.

I can't wait for Walgreens to open either. The one pharmacy downtown is great, reasonable prices, good selection of other over the counter needs, etc & some other things (cards, games, etc.) available for purchase at the same time you're waiting for your medicine to be filled. The problem is parking. Or lack thereof. A lot of people can't walk far so trying to use Graves can be a problem for some. Another pharmacy (with 2 different stores in town) is owned & run by a local politician who seems to be more concerned with his political career than with his customers. Even as a politician he doesn't seem to ever listen to the voters (although that's not unusual for any politician these days especially the local ones). I will not under any circumstances support either of his pharmacies & I've told him that. Our other wonderful choice is the south of the border store Wally World. Walking in there is like walking into another third world country. The only people it seems that speak English are the cashiers & by the time I'm ready to leave I feel like I need a 30 minute disinfecting shower. The service at the pharmacy used to be so slow I could have given birth twice before my drugs were ready but no one would have noticed anyway. This town is so in need of some fresh new businesses that I'll be one of the first in line at Walgreens. Now if the city fathers would just quit sucking up to Wally World, develop some backbone & get Lowe's, Home Depot, Target, etc. here this town might be worth living in for a while longer. Lots of new jobs, new places to shop, variety, etc. What a nice thought. Maybe so many people wouldn quit shopping in Topeka, Wichita, etc if they had a reason to shop Emporia.

Walgreens will be my One Stop Shopping. It may not have everything but nearly everything and will be a nice, clean place to shop. I've heard they are very competitive with the cost of medication too.
Looking forward to them opening soon. SE

Someday, the politicians *might* figure this out.

(Oh, and I vote here, so don't make too many assumptions).
