Quarry permit considered

Thursday, April 5, 2007

Lyon County commissioners heard an application for a rock quarry being represented by fellow commissioner Bob Davis during Wednesday’s study session.

The Lyon County Planning and Appeals Board this month approved a request on a 3-0 vote to change zoning from agriculture to agriculture special use, rock quarry, on property near Road D and Road 80, west of Olpe. The request came from Davis of Olpe, representing Pyramid Stone LLC, a corporation formed on Dec. 12, 2006, according to records of the Kansas Secretary of State.

Davis said he located high-quality marble on his property and would need the rezoning to be able to remove the marble. Davis said there will be no blasting at the quarry and no crushing or grinding. The marble will be hauled out in slabs.

Steve Samuelson, Lyon County zoning administrator and flood plain manager, said that no others had contacted his office regarding the proposed zoning change.

County commissioners Marshall Miller and Scott Briggs will vote on the application during today’s action session. Davis will abstain because of his involvement with the application.

Also on Wednesday’s agenda:

• Chip Woods, county engineer, discussed directions regarding Road U development and billing.

• Members of the Lyon County Early Childhood Task Force presented a proclamation to be read into record today making April Month of the Young Child.

• Marc Goodman, Lyon County attorney, discussed using up to $1,700 from Diversion Fund to purchase 2007 Kansas Criminal Code and 2007 Kansas Traffic Code pocket-size books for all law enforcement in Lyon County.

• Goodman discussed using up to $8,175 from Diversion Fund to purchase FullCase software maintenance and support contracts.

• Doug Stueve of the Department of Aging discussed the replacement of an office copy machine and gave a departmental update.

Woe is me. Woe are US! I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. You start taking away the (BIG) rocks and we’re all in trouble. Guess what? Next Lyon County Commission meeting (for which I’m awake), I’m bringing in some of these rocks so they (those) can see what’s happening. Some of the crushing and grinding (I didn’t sleep at all last night) is OK, but you got a lot and then it’s all SYRUPy (you know – too viscous to stop).

My vote is a big NO thank you (hat’s off to Log cabin et al)
