An inmate was found unresponsive in a holding cell in the Lyon County Jail shortly after 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, according to an announcement from the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office.
Lyle Wade Neill, 50, of Reading, was taken by Emporia-Lyon County Ambulance personnel to Newman Regional Health, where he was pronounced dead.
Neill had been charged with driving under the influence of an intoxicant and no driver’s license and had made his first appearance in Lyon County District Court on Tuesday. According to information in the case file, Neill appeared to be under the influence of alcohol during the appearance, and he was ordered to jail for contempt of court.
His next first appearance date was to have been at 12:45 p.m. Wednesday.
The Kansas Bureau of Investigation and the Lyon County Sheriff’s Department are conducting a joint investigation into the death.

Perhaps he should have been taken to the hospital to be medically detoxed vs detoxing in a jail cell. He might still be alive.

Maybe, just Maybe you all should have been there to get the full story. Do you work in the jail, Do you work in the courthouse, are you in law enforcement? If you answered no to any of these questions then you have no right to say that the police and the court system are going to make things hush hush or say that they didnt do their job. I know for a fact that the police and the court security officers and the personnel at the jail did their job correctly and did make him take a breath test. SO NEXT TIME YOU ARE QUICK TO JUMP TO CONCLUSIONS ON THE COURT SYSTEM, POLICE AND JAIL OFFICERS COVERING STUFF UP, GET THE FACTS. THIS COMMUNITY SHOULD BE SUPPORTING OUR LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICERS NOT TRASHING THEM. Next time you want to trash them, take a moment to say hey.....should I trash talk the law enforcement when I never know if I am going to need them in the future.
SO I END IT LIKE THIS: THANK YOU TO ALL OF THE LAW ENFORCEMENT PERSONNEL, THE JAIL STAFF AND ALL OF THE EMERGENCY RESPONSE PEOPLE IN OUR GREAT TOWN.

Nope not touchy, just speaking the truth. The inmate was in a detox cell with camera's on him, once he was discovered they called the ambulance, the ambulance crew informed the workers that they did everything they could do; and that they couldnt have done any better.
Just for your information; anytime there is a death at a correctional facility, be it suicide, death by riot, anything the KBI is called in to investigate, it's standard procedure. Had the paper reported all of the facts the public would know this individual had a history of alcohol abuse and it was the judge who ordered him to jail not the law enforcement.

Now, I am not positively sure that I am correct on this, but isn't there some little rule in the US that you are innocent until proven guilty...I don't believe that this guy had appeared in court and was convicted of being intoxicated while at court...maybe, just maybe that is why he "appeared to be under the influence" It could quite possibly be slander if the paper were to report that he was indeed under the influence if he had not been convicted of it. As cbmize stated, Emporians at their finest. I am so glad that I no longer live in Emporia, and the only reason I read the paper anymore is for the humor in all the ignorant comments that are posted...example...the article that was written 10 days ago that is STILL the most active discussion. How sad. Isn't there more important things to be concerned about??

Hey cbmize and esustudent, easy on Emporians. "Emporians at their finest?" Come on. There has been a grand total of a whopping seven people comment on this topic. I don't know anything either way because I wasn't there nor do I know anybody involved, and to be blunt, I don't really care. I do care however that you feel the need to bash emporians based on the comments of 8 people. And esustudent, if you're going to bash, don't leave yourself open like you did, man. "Emporians at theif finest, blah blah blah. I only read the paper to find humor in ignorant comments, blah blah blah......example....the article written 10 days ago that is STILL the most active discussion....How sad....Isn't there more important things to be concerned about?" Oh wait. You just replied. You must be concerned. You commented. You made this more active. Ooops. Don't you hate it when you do that? I'm sure your current community would love to have you chime in on their message boards. You can tell them how ignorant and sad the people from Emporia are. Or, at least 8 that you know of.
