Emporia School Board candidate Angie Schreiber visits Tuesday night while watching results at the Lyon County Courthouse. Behind Angie is her daughter, Gretchen, who got to vote this year for the first time.

Michael R. Hanks of Reading and Wayne Symmonds of Admire were elected to the North Lyon County Board of Education at the end of ballot-counting Tuesday night.

Hanks and Symmonds were in the only contested races in the district.

Hanks was elected to Position 1 and Symmonds was elected to serve in Position 7, the at-large seat on the board.

Sarah Meenen and Bill McClellan ran unopposed for Positions 2 and 3, respectively.

In a call after the election, Hanks said he wanted to say thanks to the voters.

Symmonds was pleased with the outcome.

“I’m thrilled to be elected,” he said. “It’s something that I believed was an important position for many years. Hopefully, I can make a contribution because I do think it’s very important. It just impacts a lot of people’s lives, and of course it’s a huge budget expenditure. ... Allocation of those resources is immensely important.”

Symmonds plans to attend board meetings and become more familiar with the processes involved before he takes office on July 1.

In Southern Lyon County, voters re-elected Roland “Rollie” Martin to another term. Martin, a 12-year veteran of the school board, said he was satisfied with the results and appreciated the support he received from voters.

Martin wants the board to continue working toward improvement and working as a team to accomplish that.

“You can’t go with a personal agenda,” Martin said. “You’ve got to work with your board and have a goal, standards of what you want to work for in your district.”

Martin will fill Position 7, the at-large seat.

In the second of two contested races in Southern Lyon, Donald E. Roberts was elected to fill Position 2.

“If the people have confidence enough in me to vote me in, then I’ll try to do the best job possible for that,” Roberts said.

The district does a good job priority will be finding the best teachers available and trying to keep them on staff. Other issues the board will have to deal with are inherent ones.

“There’s many challenges with state and federal regulations, finances; technology’s growing all the time,” he said. “You can never get ahead in that field.”

Those who ran unopposed in Southern Lyon County were Shelley Y. Jenkins, Position 1, and Kevin J. Flott, Position 3.
