Michael Bartlett of Emporia stopped at a convenience store on the way to work Saturday morning and walked out the door $5,000 richer, though he didn’t realize it at the time.
According to a news release from the Kansas Lottery, Bartlett had purchased a $1 Mother’s Day Doubler instant scratch ticket. He didn’t take time to scratch it until he was driving home from work that afternoon.
“When I matched three $5,000s, I thought, ‘This can’t be right,’ ” Bartlett told Lottery officials. “I kept looking and looking at my ticket.”
He called his parents to tell them of his good fortune.
“My dad likes to play the Lottery,” Bartlett said. “He’s had good luck and was excited that I’d won.”
Bartlett, who works for C & M Steam Carpet Cleaning, is single and has a one-year-old daughter.
He said that he plays Lottery games a few times a month. He purchased the winning ticket at Johnny’s Stop N Shop, 505 S. Commercial St.
