Birthday celebration
The friends and family of Leola Evans are planning a reception to celebrate her 90th birthday. The reception will be from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday at the Grand Central Hotel in Cottonwood Falls. She requests no gifts.
Her birthday will be April 29.

Driver safety class offered
An AARP Driver Safety Program will be held from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. April 14 at the Lyon County Extension Office, 618 Commercial St. The cost is $10.
According to the news release, the class is accepted by all Kansas insurance companies for a discount. Certificates received are good for three years.
A one-hour break for lunch will start at noon. Participants need to park behind the building in the Mechanic Street parking lot.
Scholarship available
The Flint Hills Council of the Kansas Reading Association is offering a $500 scholarship to a college senior who will be participating in the student teaching block during the 2007-2008 school year. Students applying for this scholarship must be a student member of a Kansas Reading Association council, be a full time student at an accredited college or university in Kansas, and be a resident of one of these Kansas counties: Morris, Chase, Lyon, Greenwood, Coffey, Osage or Woodson.
The Flint Hills Council is a professional organization of individuals concerned with promoting literacy. Girl Scouts go Hollywood
All girls in grades 4-8 are invited to the Girl Scout “Mall Madness” overnight party April 14 and 15 at the Flinthills Mall, with the theme of Hollywood Nights. Events will include shopping, dancing to DJ music, watching movies, playing games, making crafts and more.
The events are for all girls, not just Girl Scouts. The cost is $8 for Girl Scouts and $11 for non-Girl Scouts. There is no cost for mothers and leaders. Poet visits ESU Wednesday
Visiting poet Tim Seibles reads this Wednesday at 3 p.m. in Brighton Lecture Hall (Science Hall 189). Seibles is one of the most dynamic readers on the poetry circuit.
He is the author of five collections of poetry, most recently Buffalo Head Solos from Cleveland State University Poetry Center. Gifted with a broad-ranging sense of subject matter and style, his poems cover terrain as diverse as basketball, American race relations, dogs, and the inner thoughts of cartoon characters. He has received grants from the NEA and the Provincetown Fine Art Work Center, as well as an Open Voice Award. A dynamic speaker, he has also recorded a CD, Leaning House Poetry, reading his work alongside other poets.
Originally from Philadelphia, Seibles now lives in eastern Virginia, where he teaches in the MFA Program at Old Dominion University.
Reserve now for ‘Cranial Aerobics’
“Cranial Aerobics for Creative Office Conversation” is the title of a special presentation planned between 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. on April 19 at the Flint Hills Vocational-Technical College.
The presentation, by Vicky Trembly, is “a twisted combination of stand-up and improvisation to promote creativity and team-building, and relieve stress,” a news release stated.
The program is open to the public and is sponsored by the Heartland Chapter of International Association of Administrative Professionals.
The cost, including lunch, is $25 per person. Reservations are needed and may be made by calling Nadine Yust, 343-6473.
