The Emporia State baseball team split a doubleheader with Fort Hays State on Sunday, winning the first game, 5-4, before dropping the second one, 7-3.
The Hornets started well in Game One, scoring three runs in the top of the first on a home run by designated hitter Keith Hernandez.
The Tigers grabbed a 4-3 lead by the end of the second, but Chris Evans’ RBI single in the third tied it before Nick Wolfe’s sacrifice fly in the seventh provided the game-winning run.
ESU’s Ty Reese pitched a scoreless inning in relief for the win, while Daniel Waggoner picked up the final two outs for his first save.
Hernandez led the offense, going 2-for-3 with three RBI and two runs scored.
FHSU put up a pair of three-run innings in the nightcap to coast to the 7-3 victory.
The Hornets mustered just eight hits and three runs in the nine-inning affair.
Mickey Lara picked up the loss, allowing four earned runs in 6 1/3 innings.
Majors went 2-for-4 with two runs scored, while Wolfe hit his first home run of the season.
ESU will finish the four-game series with FHSU today, playing the first game of a doubleheader at noon.
