The Emporia State track and field team notched 15 top-10 finishes and also three provisional qualifiers on Saturday at the Bobby Lane/UT-Arlington Invitational.
The Hornets participated in the meet despite traveling in less-than-ideal weather.
“After the hard rains on Friday going down to Dallas, we had one of the best weather days for track and field for as long as I can remember,” ESU coach Dave Harris said. “Obviously, it was a relief to see the sun on Saturday after torrential rains on Friday night.”
The top performance for ESU came in men’s javelin, as Andy Vogelsberg’s toss of 217 feet, 2 inches earned second place. It was the senior’s first action of the year.
Connie Phillips also was impressive in the women’s javelin, taking third with a throw of 130-1. She had not participated in the throwing event in nearly a year because of injury.
Emporia High product Skyler Delmott was third in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (9:37.82), while fellow freshman Dustin Andrews also took third in the high jump (6-4 3/4).
Indoor All-American Jonel Rossbach placed fourth in the 1,500-meter run, posting the third-fastest time in ESU history with a 4:35.12.
Along with Vogelsberg (javelin) and Rossbach (1,500-meter), Trent Olivier took the other provisionally qualifying mark, throwing 160-10 in the discus for seventh.
Also standing out was Jaclyn Sill, who contributed personal-record times in both the 200-meter and 400-meter races. Her 400-meter time of 56.98 seconds was the fastest of her career and also the top non-Division-I time.
“The team responded well to the competition and we had many personal bests,” Harris said. “The competition always opens the eyes of the freshmen to some great Texas track and field.”
Included in the elite group that ran at the meet were Olympic gold medalists Darnell Williamson and Jeremy Wariner.
Neither athlete won his event.
“It is great for our athletes to be exposed to watching first-hand some great athletes in our sport,” Harris said.
The Hornets will play host to the ESU/State Farm Relays on Saturday. Competition begins at 10 a.m. with the field events.
