Pats on the back

Friday, September 29, 2006

Each Friday, The Gazette salutes those who make Emporia and the surrounding area a better place to live and work. The following folks deserve a pat on the back ...

Betty Senn, who received a Big Thinker award from the Kansas Department of Commerce. Senn heads up the workforce center and the quarterly award is given to an outstanding employee.

• Flint Hills Technical College, which has awarded more than $46,000 in scholarships this semester. To qualify students must meet academic achievement and leadership.

• Eric McCabe who upset the world’s No. 1 ranked disc golfer, Barry Shultz, in a tournament in Carrollton, Texas. McCabe finished 47 under par and nine strokes ahead of Shultz.

• The Emporia High football team, now 3-1 in a turnaround season.

• Jack Cassell, who paid to fix the clock attached to the Bank of America. The clock has been broken for a decade.

• The Sunrise Rotary Club, which donated dictionaries to all third grade students in North and Southern Lyon County School district.
