Being Still

Emporia Middle School student Tagan Trahoon, 12, reads from the Bible this morning during See You at the Pole.

This year, See You At the Pole was wired for sound.

“Last year, we had so many people, it was tough to hear,” band teacher James Davis said as he began setting up small speakers and a microphone near the Emporia Middle School flagpole this morning. “We started thinking about that and decided, ‘You know, there’s an easy solution.’”

See You at the Pole has been going on at EMS for about four or five years, but nationwide, the observance dates back to 1990 when students in Burleson, Texas, began the annual event by gathering one day each year around the school’s flagpole to pray for each other and the world.

This year in Emporia, 52 people, both students and adults, gathered around the middle school flagpole before the start of school. A cool breeze brought a slight chill to an otherwise beautiful morning — and made some students wish they’d worn long sleeves.

“I forgot my jacket,” one girl said.

“Do we have to sing?” another asked.

No singing this year. Just a few prayers and readings from the Bible, including this year’s nationwide theme from Psalm 46: “Be still and know that I am God.”

“I think this was our biggest year, I really do,” said Iona Moore, a paraeducator at the school who has been involved with the event every year. “Last year, I couldn’t get ’em charged up enough to pray. Now, some of those students were praying, praying, praying.”
