Olpe Eagles shut out West Elk

Saturday, September 23, 2006

Olpe exploded for 20 points in the first quarter on its way to a 26-0 victory over West Elk.

Seth Pargman, Jordan Pargman and Drew Pettijohn all scored in the first eight minutes, but West Elk buckled down its defense from there.

“We jumped on them quick, but they really did play hard in the second and third quarters,” Olpe coach Mike Plunkett said. “They outplayed us in many respects, and I was a little disappointed that we didn’t try to step up and play with their intensity.”

The Eagles did add to their lead in the fourth quarter, scoring on a Jordan Pargman eight-yard run.

Jordan Pargman led the Eagles with 21 carries for 93 yards.

Waverly 60,

K.C. Prep 34

Matt Coursen was the hero of the night for Waverly, scoring four touchdowns, three two-point conversions and passing for another score as Waverly rolled to a 26-point victory over K.C. Prep.

The first-team all-state selection from a year ago started the scoring with a 67-yard strike to Heath Redding.

He followed with a 67-yard touchdown reception, later adding 14-, 52-, and 11-yard TD runs.

The senior finished with 136 yards rushing, 76 yards receiving and 67 yards passing.

Dentin Chapman added a pair of TD passes, while Dakota Foster contributed two touchdowns as well.

Waverly improved to 4-0 with the victory.

Madison 50,

Marais des Cygnes 0

Madison scored 36 first-half points on its way to a 50-0 victory over Marais des Cygnes Valley on Friday night.

The game was ended in the third quarter by the mercy rule.

Jordan Stout led the Bulldogs, rushing 12 times for 132 yards and a pair of scores. He also completed 4-of-5 passes for 92 yards and a touchdown.

“He’s probably the best player in our league,” MdCV coach Trenton Douglas said. “He dominated most of game.”

Five other players scored for Madison in the rout.

Chisom Spencer paced the Trojans with 28 rushing yards.

Madison’s victory sets up a battle of the unbeatens, as the team travels to face Waverly next week.

Lyndon 53,

Chase County 14

After suffering a blowout loss to Uniontown last week, Lyndon bounced back in a big way Friday night, taking a 39-point victory over Chase County at home.

“We literally came out Monday and started over,” Lyndon coach Damon Leiss said. “All week, we preached the little things. We went back to basics, challenged the kids, and they responded.”

Lyndon scored the first 47 points to build a comfortable lead.

Kade Neilson led the Tiger attack, rushing 18 times for 138 yards and three touchdowns. Quarterback Shea Kirsop added two touchdown passes.

Kyle Grokett put Chase County on the scoreboard in the fourth quarter, scoring on a four-yard run.

Hartford 64,

Burlingame 14

Friday’s game against the Burlingame Bearcats marked another victory for the Hartford Jaguars. With this game under their belts, the Jaguars remain undefeated in both league and non-league games.

Opening the scoring was Hartford’s Chris Wiggins with a three-yard run in the first quarter. Wiggins led the Jaguars in both scoring and rushing yards.

It was Burlingame’s Danny Harris, however, who led all rushers, running a total of 140 yards with 19 rushes.

The Jaguars’ second team played during the second half.

“They’re pretty good ballplayers,” Hartford coach Les Stein said. “We have some underclassmen that could almost play varsity.”

Northern Heights 42,

Herington 12

The Northern Heights Wildcats started out strong in Friday night’s victory against the Herington Railers.

By the end of the first half, the Wildcats held a lead of 35 points. Even with the Wildcats’ minimal scoring in the second half, however, the Railers failed to redeem themselves on the scoreboard.

“We played a lot better than we have been,” Northern Heights coach Greg French said. “We’ve been having some trouble with consistency, but we did good.”

Consistency wasn’t the only improvement made by the Wildcats, however.

“Defensively, we played with more heart and passion,” French said. “Our pass coverage really improved.”

Helping achieve the 30-point victory was Northern Heights’ Michael Glass, who scored three times. Also helping the Wildcats with touchdowns were Colter Henning and Bryant Heins.

Goessel 60,

Flinthills 48

The Flinthills Mustangs couldn’t recover from a slow start in a 12-point loss to Goessel.

Flinthills dominated in first downs (17-5) and passing yards (304-41) but failed to stop the Goessel rushing attack.

The Bluebirds finished with 405 rushing yards, led by Garrett Hiebert, who ended his night with 10 carries for 203 yards and four touchdowns.

Despite the loss, Flinthills racked up some eye-popping stats on offense. Jeremy Jackson completed 13-of-23 passes for an astounding 304 yards and four touchdowns.

His favorite target, Jimmy Michal, gathered in eight catches for 161 yards and three scores. He also found the end zone on a 79-yard kickoff return in the third quarter.

Running back Cody Oates added 29 rushes for 113 yards and a TD.

The two teams combined for 912 yards of total offense.

Gazette sports intern Erica Bennett and sports reporter Jesse Newell contributed to this report.
