Waverly jumped all over Burlingame on Saturday night with a 29-point scoring outburst in the first quarter, as the Bulldogs went on the win 48-0 after the game was called once the spread reached 45 points.
Matt Coursen broke open the scoring with a 15-yard run, the first of Waverly’s four touchdowns in the opening period.
Dakota Foster added a four-yard score, and then Waverly’s quarterback Dentin Chapman began his assault. He scored the first of his four touchdowns with a 12-yard pass to Coursen and added another one minute later on a 12-yard run.
In the first quarter, Waverly had several drives that began inside Burlingame’s 30-yard line, which led to numerous short-field opportunities for the Bulldogs.
“Burlingame lost a couple fumbles early deep in their own territory,” Waverly coach Mike Hevel said. “We had a short field all night long, and we made a couple of big plays.”
Chapman and Coursen connected again for a touchdown in the second quarter, this time on a 12-yard strike.
Chapman and Coursen hooked up for the third time on a 43-yard touchdown pass in the third quarter.
While the offense certainly had it going Saturday night, Hevel was even more pleased with his defense’s effort.
“I thought we played defensively our best game of the year,” he said.
Council Grove 28,
Mission Valley 6
Tanner Messer ran all over Mission Valley Friday night, rushing for four touchdowns in Council Grove’s 22-point victory.
The senior finished with 21 rushes for 263 yards, averaging 12.5 yards per carry.
“He was really the standout of the game,” Council Grove assistant coach Derek Scott said. “He’s had stellar performances in his first three games.”
Messer had a flair for the long play, scoring on 63-, 60- and 25-yard runs.
Meanwhile, the Braves’ defense turned in another solid effort. Council Grove has allowed just 12 points through three games this season.
The Braves improved to a perfect 3-0.
“We’re excited,” Scott said, “about what we’ve got going.”
Flinthills 46,
Hamilton 14
Flinthills scored the first 32 points in Friday’s 46-14 rout against Hamilton.
Cody Oates led the way, rushing 27 times for 136 yards and four touchdowns.
Jimmy Michal added an impressive feat in the first quarter, connecting on a 48-yard field goal to extend the Mustangs’ lead to 10-0.
Also, Flinthills’ Jeremy Jackson literally did a little bit of everything. The senior ran for a touchdown, threw for a touchdown, caught a touchdown pass and kicked three extra points.
Hamilton finally broke through in the fourth quarter on a 55-yard run from Beau Smith. Charlie Schlotterbeck later added a 25-yard touchdown run.
Schlotterbeck led the Tigers on the ground, rushing 15 times for 97 yards.
Hartford 42, Marais des Cygnes Valley 20
In Friday night’s game at Melvern, the Hartford Jaguars beat the Marais des Cygnes Valley Trojans by a score of 42-20. This was the Jaguars’ first game of the season in the Lyon County League.
Friday’s game brought the Trojans to a record of 0-3 both overall and in league games.
“The game was pretty well played,” MdCV coach Trenton Douglas said. “The Hartford boys had a lot of good plays, and most of their offense was touchdowns.”
Starting the scoring for Marais des Cygnes Valley was Brandon Litch with a three-yard run.
Another crucial player during Friday’s game was Marais des Cygnes’ Chisom Spencer, who had 30 rushes for a total of 216 yards.
Leading the scoring for the Jaguars was Scott Gardner and Mickey Mathews. Gardner led the team with three touchdowns, while Mathews scored two.
Lebo 38,
Kansas City Prep 30
The Lebo Wolves continued their undefeated season Friday night, defeating K.C. Prep by a score of 38-30.
However, the victory did not come easily.
“They’re a pretty tough ball club,” Lebo coach Butch Jones said. “It was just an old-style, hard-nose football game.”
Lebo’s Bryant Linsey led the Wolves, scoring four touchdowns, while also leading his team in rushing with 14 rushes for 83 yards. However, Linsey was not the only one to perform well, Jones said.
“The whole team played well tonight,” Jones said. “We were pretty balanced. A lot of players came off the bench.”
Throughout the whole game, K.C. Prep was never far behind. One of its key players, Will Mann, led his team in rushing with 19 rushes for 105 yards, as well as passing, with nine completions for a total of 139 yards.
