Time to give

Wednesday, September 13, 2006

OUR COMMUNITY needs your help.

Tomorrow, the annual United Way fundraising campaign will begin. During the campaign, volunteers will be out asking for donations and we hope you will give.

The money raised is given to local social service agencies. Last year, 26 social service agencies in five counties received the money. Below is a complete list of agencies that received money.

Last year, our community had a successful campaign; we reached the $600,000 goal. Even though the goal was met, there were still some agency programs that went unfunded.

Obviously, we want to build on last year’s campaign success in hopes that we can fund the needs of all agencies.

Last year, nationwide giving reached an all time high because of an outpouring of support for Katrina victims. People felt compelled to give because of the round-the-clock media coverage of people who were homeless.

This year, the media may not be consumed with disaster coverage, but we need to remember that there are people in our own community who have needs.

Area social service agencies fill important roles in the community and we hope you will consider giving to them during the United Way fundraising campaign.

This year, I serve as the drive chair for the campaign. If you have questions about the United Way or giving please call me at 342-4800.

Reminder: This is the last chance to get tickets for the Classic Brunch this Sunday at ESU. Former Las Vegas chef Harold Jensen, who has cooked for the stars, will prepare an excellent meal including prime rib. The proceeds from the event go to benefit the United Way. For more information, call 342-4800.

Also, tomorrow, the Grand Central in Cottonwood Falls will donate 20 percent of its receipts to the United Way. So go out and get a great meal.
