Relay raises $71,000

Monday, September 11, 2006

It was the biggest and best weekend the local Relay for Life has ever had, bringing in more than $70,000 and surpassing the goal.

Kathy Salts of Relay for Life said this morning that organizers had counted up to $71,000 and more money is still being counted as some came in at the last minute.

“We surpassed our goal,” Salts said. “We are so happy that all went well.”

Salts said luminaries covered the inside and outside of the track and the event had around 63 teams.

“There were just so many luminaries because of all the new teams, too,” Salts said.

Rain didn’t stop the Relay, Salts said. One person even showed up and was giving ponchos out to participants.

“It was rainy all night but we didn’t stop because cancer doesn’t stop,” she said. “Even through the storms of our lives, it doesn’t stop. I think there’s a lot of symbolism — letting people know that we are going to be there for them no matter what it takes.”

Salts said this year’s Relay was the best the group has ever had.

“We are very impressed with our town,” she said. “And we couldn’t do it without the high school letting us use the track.”
