Hornet volleyball .500 over weekend

The Emporia State volleyball team finished 2-2 at the Washburn Lady Blues Classic after splitting a pair of matches on Saturday.

ESU defeated South Dakota in five games (26-30, 30-12, 30-28, 27-30, 15-13) before falling to No. 12 Nebraska - Omaha in four (30-18, 27-30, 30-24, 30-25).

Mandy Chutskoff led the Hornets in the first match, recording 16 kills. It was ESU’s first five-game victory of the season.

Freshman Arica Shepard paced ESU with 13 kills in the second match. Chutskoff added 10 kills, while senior Courtney Aguilar contributed a match-high 24 digs.

ESU (6-7) will play its home opener at 7 p.m. Wednesday against Fort Hays State in White Auditorium.

ESU soccer falls to Washburn on road, 2-1

The ESU soccer team dropped its conference opener, 2-1, to Washburn on Sunday.

WU’s Ashley Taylor led off the scoring with a goal in the 41st minute, but ESU responded quickly.

In the 57th minute, Raquel White took advantage of a midfield pass from Sarah Tetuan, blasting the ball from 20 yards and beating Ichabod keeper Jenna Hatlestad to tie the game at 1.

Jessica Mainz provided the game-winner in the 69th minute, putting a 15-yard shot by ESU’s Erin Allen.

The two teams combined for 31 fouls, which was the most for ESU since last season’s Emporia State-Washburn matchup.

With the victory, Washburn remains undefeated, improving to 6-0-1.

ESU (1-4) will play host to No. 15 Central Missouri State at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the TRYSA soccer complex.
