• The Emporia High School boys cross country team, which won the Manhattan Invitational for the fifth straight year.
• Mike Dunn, Scott Jones and Tom Watts, the newest members of the Emporia Police Department. Welcome aboard, gentlemen.
• All the area high school football teams that opened the season last week. Welcome back to the Friday night lights.
• Participants in the United Way’s Pacesetter campaign, which concludes this week.
• Emporia State University’s football team for starting off the season in exciting style with a 69-6 win over Oklahoma Panhandle State.
• Neosho Rapids, for successfully getting its first tornado siren in four years. When the wind blows, the town will be ready.
