United Way Pre-Campaign Ends Friday

Wednesday, September 6, 2006

The United Way’s Pacesetter campaign will finish Friday, clearing the way for the organization’s full campaign to begin Sept. 14

Pacesetter chair Larie Schoap said that so far, things seemed to be running well. She did not have totals yet, but said there were only a few people left to hear from before everything was added up.

“I was talking to one of the pacesetters and she said she just had one more of her employees to get,” Schoap said on Sunday. “Everyone is being very responsive.”

Pacesetter companies spend about a month raising money before the formal fund-raising drive starts. Last year’s pacesetters raised about $330,000, more than half of the $600,000 goal.

In a new twist this year, the United Way outlined five focus areas and asked its funded agencies to explain how donations would help them meet those needs. Schoap said that seemed to make things clearer for some companies.

“People understand and respond to that,” she said.

Agencies funded by the United Way are Big Brothers Big Sisters; Boy Scouts Jayhawk Council; Quivira Council BSA; Building Blocks Community Day Care; Camp Alexander; Morris County Care & Share; Catholic Community Services; Chase Children's Services; Coffey County Red Cross; Coffey County Resource Council; Compeer; Consumer Credit Counseling; Emporia Child Care Center; Emporia Community Housing Organization (ECHO).

And, Girl Scout Council of Flint Hills; Kansas Legal Services; TFI Family Services (formerly The Farm); Lyon County Red Cross; Lyon County Restricted Emergency Fund; Plumb Place; Project T.E.E.N.; SOS; The Learning Connection; The Salvation Army; and United Cerebral Palsy.
