Emporia State volleyball finishes 2-2 over weekend

The Emporia State volleyball team finished 2-2 over the weekend at the Missouri Western/Ramada Inn Invitational after sweeping two matches on Saturday.
ESU took down Ala.-Huntsville 30-21, 30-22, 30-25 in the first match. Freshman Arica Shepard paced the Hornets with 12 kills, while Mandy Chutskoff added 10.
In match two, ESU dominated Colorado Christian in a 30-15, 30-11, 30-23 victory. Chutskoff and Mary Walczuk led the Hornets with 13 kills apiece, while setter Kayla Nolte notched 43 assists.
ESU (4-4) will open conference play tonight when it travels to Joplin, Mo., to face Missouri Southern.
ESU soccer drops to 1-3 after weekend in Minn.
The Emporia State soccer team lost a pair of games at the St. Cloud (Minn.) State tournament over the weekend.
ESU dropped its first match, 1-0, to Minn.-Duluth on Saturday. The game remained scoreless until the 73rd minute, when UMD’s Clare Dahmen scored the clinching goal.
Erin Allen posted six saves for the Hornets. ESU was outshot 26-13 by UMD.
On Sunday, the Hornets lost to the host team, St. Cloud (Minn.) State, 3-1. The game was delayed nearly two hours because of rain and lightning in the area.
SCSU scored first with a goal in the 18th minute, but freshman Jennifer Gurnsey responded quickly. In the 27th minute, she scored the Hornets’ lone goal on an assist from Caitlin Riemer.
The match was postponed one hour during halftime, then another 50 minutes midway through the second half.
After the second delay, SCSU’s Trista Cooke put the game out of reach. She scored her second goal of the game in the 68th minute, then tacked on another with 13 seconds to play to complete the hat trick.
ESU keeper Megan Martin notched eight saves in the loss.
The Hornets (1-3) will open the conference season at 1 p.m. Sunday, travelling to play Washburn in Topeka.
ESU men’s cross country
places 2nd at meet
After sitting out last season, the ESU men’s cross country team made a strong statement at Sunday’s Maple Leaf Invitational in Baldwin City, placing second out of 10 teams.
Emporia High product Skyler Delmott led the Hornets in his first collegiate race, finishing in sixth place with a time of 16:06.
Sophomore Marcus Summers had a ninth-place showing (16:26), and a pair of former EHS athletes came in third and fourth on the team.
Brock Ternes placed 12th overall with a 16:33, and freshman Shea Camien came in 18th with a 16:54.
“The guys are very young,” ESU coach Dave Harris said, “and this first meet provided a racing experience for them.”
The women, meanwhile, took fifth out of eight teams participating.
Jonel Rossbach (12:10) and Krysta Fennewald (12:15) finished in sixth and seventh place overall.
ESU will run next at the Nebraska Woody Greeno Invitational in Lincoln, Neb., on Sept. 16.
