EHS girls golf finishes 10th In Salina

Wednesday, September 6, 2006

Sophomore Maryann Bennett shot a 12-over-par 47 Tuesday at the Salina Central Invitational to finish in a tie for 24th to lead the EHS girls golf team, which placed 10th place out of 11 teams.

Bennett’s score placed her just five shots outside the top 10.

Bennett was followed by freshman Hannah Watkins, who tied for 42nd with a score off 52, sophomore Lenae Wells, who shot a 53 to finish in a tie for 44th, senior Alyssa Coffelt, whose 20-over-par 55 placed her in a tie for 52nd, senior Aubrey Koeppe, who shot a 56 to tie for 54th, and freshman Rachel Clopton, who finished 63rd with a score of 60.

As a team, Emporia High finished with a score of 207, two shots better than 12th-place Newton. Salina South took home the team title with a score of 170.

Volleyball team

drops three matches

The Emporia High volleyball team opened it season in a not-so-grand fashion, losing all three matches it played at Topeka High on Tuesday night.

The Spartans suffered losses at the hands of Topeka High (22-25, 25-23, 25-23) and Santa Fe Trail (25-20, 23-25, 25-13) in three tightly contested games, while Washburn Rural swept EHS in two games (27-25, 25-16).

Coach Kendra Bloomquist said there were signs that her team played well enough volleyball to win some matches Tuesday night, particularly in playing three close matches to some tough competition.

“It’s probably the best we’ve looked in going 0-3 at a quad. I don’t know if you can take any solace from that or not,” Bloomquist said. “I thought our serving looked good. We just had too many unforced errors.

“We played some good volleyball. Obviously, I’m not ecstatic after going 0-3, and we’ve got some work to do, but we looked pretty good at times.”

The next action for the Lady Spartans is next Tuesday when EHS begins its home slate with the Emporia Quad.

Spartan tennis finishes 2nd at Valley Center

Powered by a first-place finish at the No. 2 singles spot by Rachel Bachman, the EHS girls tennis team finished second as a team at the Valley Center Invite on Tuesday.

Emilia Chiroy also had a strong showing, finishing second playing in place of the usual No. 1 singles player, Hallie Kretsinger.

Emporia High brought home two second-place showings in doubles play with the No. 1 doubles team of Sarah Watkins and McKenzie Cinelli and the No. 2 doubles team of Jennifer Newell and Kaitlin Pederson.
