Olpe volleyball struggles at State tourney

Monday, October 30, 2006

The Olpe volleyball team capped a stellar season with a disappointing finish in the 1A State tournament in Hays.

The Lady Eagles entered the tournament as the No. 1 seed with a sparkling 34-1 record, but ran into trouble on the first day of play on Friday.

In the opening match, eventual State champion Linn defeated Olpe, 25-23, 25-14, to immediately put the Lady Eagles in a hole. Olpe bounced back and defeated Sharon Springs 25-18, 25-19, but lost again, this time to South Haven, 25-19, 25-18, to give the Lady Eagles a 1-2 record in Pool I play, which was not good enough to advance to the championship round on Saturday.

Olpe finished the year 35-3.

Osage City volleyball finishes in 4th

The Osage City volleyball team advanced to Saturday’s championship round of the 3A State tournament with wins on Friday over Oberlin, 2-1 (17-25, 26-24, 25-17), and Frontenac, 2-0 (25-14, 25-19) while losing to Wellsville, 2-1 (18-25, 25-22, 25-19).

On Saturday, Osage City lost in the semifinals to eventual champion, Silver Lake, 2-0 (25-9, 25-22) and went on to lose to Hillsboro in the third-place game, 2-1 (25-27, 25-23, 25-8).

Osage City finished with a 25-13 record.
