OLPE

The City of Olpe installed a system this month to help keep the city water’s chlorine levels at the appropriate levels.

“This month we bought a system to help address this issue,” said Mayor Jerry Tempelmeyer. “(The) cost was around $900 and it’s one we can control” to adjust for more or less chlorine.

Tempelmeyer said that most of the chlorine-reading problems were during the summer and that Olpe was not the only water district that experienced problems.

“Emporia supplies us with water and we would get the chlorine level we needed at the pump house, but by the time it traveled 10 miles we would lose a little bit,” Tempelmeyer said. “Olpe was never below the requirements, but it was close enough we felt something needed to be done to prevent problems other communities have had to deal with in the past several years.”

Coffey County

The Coffey County Library has been ranked first among 32 libraries of its size in the state for the second consecutive year.

The State Library of Kansas awarded the ranking to the CCL as being the best library among service areas of 4,000 to 9,999 people.

The ranking is based on several factors, including the number of children’s and adults’ programs, patrons-to-population ratio, number of employees and square footage.

The library system is made up of six branch libraries located in Burlington, New Strawn, Waverly, Lebo, Gridley and LeRoy.

CCL has 9,900 current library card-holders; Coffey County has a population of 7,880. The difference in figures is attributed to the library policy of issuing service cards to Wolf Creek Generating Station outage workers and residents of contiguous counties.

Arson is suspected in a mobile home fire last week southeast of Lebo. The mobile home is located at 2064 Iris Road and is owned by Jimmy and Carla Siebuhr.

State Fire Marshal Mark McCleary is investigating the blaze.

COUNCIL GROVE

The Council Grove Board of Education and the Teachers Association have declared they are at an impasse in negotiating a contract for the current year.

The two teams have sent a Petition for Impasse Declaration to the Office of Labor Relations in Topeka, with the expectation that a federal mediator will be appointed.

Teachers have been working under their old contract while negotiation efforts were underway.

The six areas in which agreement cannot be reached are: Health insurance, contract days, advancement on salary schedule, release from contract/liquidated damages, extra duties such as club sponsors, and salary, including supplemental base and step amounts.

Chad and Taylor Alderman of Council Grove came home with several first place awards from the Monster Splash swim meet held last weekend at Kansas State University in Manhattan.

Chad, who competes in the boys 13-14 division, won first place in the 200-yard individual medley, 200 freestyle and 50 freestyle.

Taylor, who competes in the girls 11-12 division, won first place in the 100-yard breaststroke.

Both youngsters also took second and third places in numerous divisions.

WHITE CITY

Russ and Devan Woods will provide the music for a Halloween dance Saturday in the White City American Legion. The dance will run from 8 p.m. to midnight, with breakfast served afterwards.
