Madison Before lightning caused the Hartford-Madison football game to be postponed Thursday night, the Madison offense provided some bolts of its own.
Sparked by quarterback Jordan Stout’s 105 rushing yards and two touchdowns — including a 56-yard TD run on Madison’s second possession — the Bulldogs rolled up 161 total yards to take a 22-0 lead before the game was suspended because of heavy rains and lightning with 4:51 left in the second quarter.
Hartford, meanwhile, had trouble getting anything going on a mud-slicked field, as the Jaguars had just 34 yards of offense and a turnover — an interception by Madison’s Matt Whitehurst late in the first quarter.
The game will resume at 3:30 p.m. today at Madison.
Chase County 20, Yates Center 12
For a while, it looked as if Chase County would have to hold off on a victory celebration, as power was cut off in the third quarter.
However, power was soon restored, and the Bulldogs went on to win, 20-12, over Yates Center Thursday night in Cottonwood Falls.
Storms knocked out the power, cutting the field lights and sending the teams to the busses to ride out the storm. Chase County coach Ron Albers said after the delay, both teams gave uninspired efforts.
“We came back, and we were flat,” Albers said.
The game was the last for both teams, as each school does not have records that qualify them for postseason play. Albers said he wanted to motivate his young team to play well by asking them for a win for the five graduating seniors.
“It was their duty to get a win for the seniors,” Albers said. “When you’re playing that many young kids, it’s tough.”
Albers said he was happy to end the season on a positive note.
“It was a good way to end the season,” Albers said.
Albers said the one downside of the night was his special teams, as Yates Center’s two touchdowns came after long punt returns.
“Special teams didn’t do especially well,” Albers said.
Chase County led for most of the game, after a Brian Palermo 84-yard touchdown run in the first quarter. Palermo ended the night with 245 yards rushing on 42 carries, and generated most of the offense for Chase County.
Flinthills 30, Udall 6
Flinthills won a 30-6 decision over Udall Thursday night in a game called midway through the second quarter due to bad weather.
The game was delayed at the 8:32 mark in the second quarter, and both coaches agreed to make that score the final instead of waiting for the weather to clear up or delay the rest of the game until a later date.
Even so, Flinthills’ offense rolled in the little playing time it had, racking up 157 yards of offense — all on the ground — and scored three touchdowns. On top of that, Jimmy Michal intercepted a pass from Udall and returned it for a touchdown.
Lyndon 43, Alma-Wabaunsee 0
For the Lyndon Tigers, Thursday night’s victory over Alma marks their entrance into this season’s playoffs.
Carrying the team was Kade Neilson with 200 rushing yards. Neilson also scored two touchdowns in the first quarter, and another in the third quarter.
Ending Thursday night’s game was Derek Banzhof with a 17-yard run in the final quarter. This touchdown left the Tigers with a 43-0 score and a 5-4 record for the season.
Rossville 27, Northern Heights 0
Thursday night’s game against Rossville left the Northern Heights Wildcats in defeat.
Rossville scored consistently throughout the game with one touchdown in each quarter quarter.
Offensively, the Wildcats couldn’t quite keep up with Rossville. At the end of the game, Northern Heights had racked up 186 total offensive yards.
Individually, junior Jake Weakley led the Wildcats in offensive yards. Weakley had eight carries for a total of 55 yards, as well as 10 complete passes for a total of 86 yards.
